Reintroducing manual skills in the classroom

Because life isn't just maths, estonian students learn to cook, sew, handle wood or maintain electricity. This is a way of raising awareness from an early age about crafts, which too often suffer from a lack of esteem.
Gustav Adolf Grammar School is one of the oldest municipal schools in Tallinn, as well as one of the most modern, and a model of excellence. The balance between respect for traditions and openness to new technologies and educational approaches is the key to their approach.
Thus the classrooms are equipped both with classic blackboards, but also with digital interactive boards. The methods are used in symbiosis with each other.
“You can get the most modern tools, the greatest computer for the school, but it’s the people who will use them. The biggest and most successful projects are connected with people, ” says Henrik Salum, director of the school.
Teachers are free to choose their teaching methods. Computers, as in all of Estonia, are a major component of learning, but everyone is free to use theirs at the level they want. In any case, for students who specialize in this field, there is no course dedicated to digital tools. They learn through other subjects, using Excel to do math, discovering thesaurus resources, etc. This approach is defined as an “applied transversal” method of learning.
Another particularity of the Gustav Adolf Grammar School is its participatory model. Professors are involved in the ongoing development and redefinition of their departments. The students have their own assembly, as do the parents. And even former students have their say. School is an integral part of people's lives; here it becomes a truly social center for everyone.
