Learning to play contemporary music at school in a fun and interactive way
Bruno Verbrugghe

There are few solutions for introducing composition and improvisation in schools, and playing the music listened to by the younger generation often requires a lot of equipment and in-depth technical knowledge.

Already adopted by more than 2,500 beginners and experienced musicians, the dualo du-touch S is an innovative and intuitive electronic musical instrument designed by Intuitive Instruments, which has also seduced the school environment with its creative and educational potential.

Annabel Fleuret, director of the 4 z'Arts music school in Magnanville (78), talks to us on video about her discovery of the instrument and how it has been integrated into her music training classes (see video above).

An educational tool that prioritises practice

Deployed in several classes, conservatories, media libraries and other musical mediation environments, the du-touch S is a tool used as an accompaniment instrument (e.g. singing), for teaching the sounds of musical instruments, but also and above all for students' musical practice. Whether individually with headphones or collectively with an adapted sound system (e.g. a small speaker), the students appropriate the instrument in just a few minutes thanks to its simple and uncluttered interface, and can create complete pieces instinctively, spontaneously, and above all while having fun. The du-touch S is self-contained, easy and quick to set up, and does not need a computer to be played.

First of all, a vast library of sounds that can be customised by the teacher is accessible in a single gesture: percussion, keyboards, strings, winds, synthesizers, sound effects... Students can discover a wide variety of instruments and play them.

Then to stay in tune, music theory is not necessary; the lights on the double keyboard are guides to avoid false notes. Furthermore, the mathematical and visual logic of the keyboard (patented dualo principle) means that chords are represented by simple, ergonomic and invariable drawings; on a keyboard, it is enough to play two, three or even four notes lit up next to each other to make harmonious chords. A real asset for understanding and teaching harmony.

Finally, the instrument allows you to record and superimpose loops in two clicks, and guided rhythmically if necessary (metronome, quantizer) to create musical atmospheres in a wide variety of styles according to the scales and sounds chosen. Finally, it is possible to play conductor with its loops live, to learn how to evolve a piece or link different parts of a song.

Individual or group use

In group workshops, the dualo du-touch S can be used in combination with other instruments or singing, but also with other du-touch S (simply synchronised in tempo). A common and effective use is to pass a single instrument around and build a song collaboratively; one student records a percussion loop, then passes it to the next student who records a bass, a third student records chords, etc. This setup greatly enhances the listening experience. This configuration greatly encourages listening to what others are playing, group cohesion, and is ideal for understanding and experimenting with the place of instruments in a piece.

Used more independently this time, the instrument is also accompanied by an integrated educational game, the du-game, consisting of a series of interactive tutorials accompanied by the voice of a teacher and an evaluation algorithm. They allow you to learn the basic notions of music (rhythm, harmony), the key characteristics of a large number of musical styles (Hip-Hop, Reggae, Techno,...) to enrich your musical vocabulary and progress at your own pace, and to replay a few well-known pieces to discover their secrets. About you
The Intuitive Instruments team is constantly on the lookout for organisations wishing to experiment with these new technologies for music learning, and is available to train and support them, listening to their requests to guide the development of new features. Intuitive Instruments is also proud to be the winner of a call for projects from the French National Education system to equip secondary school classes for the start of the 2022 school year. There are few solutions for introducing composition and improvisation in schools, and playing the music listened to by the younger generation often requires a lot of equipment and in-depth technical knowledge.
